PURPLE!"
Back in the early `70's the Chicago and
New Haven Women's Liberation Rock Bands pioneered in challenging everything about male rock. Using comedy, satire,
and a diversity of styles, we overturned the assaultive macho of a standard rock performance. Audiences, in ecstatic
celebration of a newly-realized sisterhood, danced and shouted and sang along with the bands and when it was over,
still shouting, the audience stormed the stage, hugging the band members and our instruments and sometimes even
our amplifiers.
Rounder Records (the pre-eminent roots, protest label) is reissuing our 1972 vinyl recording. So finally, you can
hear a cleared-up CD of that old record you've had for 30 years but haven't been able to play since your turntable
broke. (And for folks who've never even seen a turntable, here's a chance to hear what women's liberation sounded
like in 1972.) This time, the CD will be as NEW as it is old -- 6 new tracks, one by Riot Grrrls' Kathleen Hanna,
currently of Le Tigre.

NAOMI WEISSTEIN -- A Harvard grad student in pschyology in '6? she was
forbidden entrance to the Lamont Library , which was closed to women, because, she was told "women are a distraction
to men ." "You want distraction, she said..I'll show you distraction," and she friends with signs,
a violin and a clarinet positioned themselves underneath the windows of Lamont Library that evening and serenaded
the scholars. Uneasy with Harvard's male chauvinism, she changed to Chicago U , ( and to neuroscience) where, in
1966, with Heather Booth, Jo Freeman and Shulie Firestone she founded the Women's Liberation Union . IN 1970 she
organized the Women's Liberation Rock Band and recorded with the New Haven Women's Liberation Rock Band. She's
done stand up comedy, was in Eve Merriam's One Woman Show..She's been an invalid for several years, but collaborates
with colleagues on experiments with neuroscience.
