Ruth Mandel, who ran the Center for American Women and Politics at the Eagleton Institute of Politics at Rutgers University, went on to serve as the Institute director. She was also an official with the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington, where she bore witness, and worked to educate new generations about learning from the past to inform the present.

As a small child, Ruth was on the oceanliner St. Louis along with her parents and more than 900 Jewish refugees from Germany when no country – not even the United States – would take them in. That ship came to be called “Voyage of the Damned.”
